OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Antoine Walker

ARCHETYPE

The Disruptor

Contrarian and drawn to the edge; challenges the settled answer.

Antoine Walker reads as The Disruptor because he redefined the power forward position before the league had vocabulary for it. Dribbling, shooting threes, and running point at six foot eight, he absorbed ridicule from Boston media and coaches for instincts the modern NBA now treats as baseline. He never trimmed his game to fit the criticism. From Chicago to Kentucky to Adidas, his arc belongs to someone who bet on unconventional reads and outlasted the doubt.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY DISRUPTOR

I shot eight threes in the game. They'd be like, why do you shoot so many? I'm like, that's part of my game. They used to criticize me — big articles. And I'm looking at these guys now today, I feel like I'd probably make three hundred million in this era.

ON BEING AHEAD OF HIS TIME

Coach Pete moved me to the four and man, I'm at the three, one folk pick-and-roll, them big dudes trying to close out on me. I can shoot the three, I can take him off the dribble. That's what really took off.

ON REINVENTING THE POWER FORWARD ROLE

Magic Johnson and Isaiah Thomas were my two favorite players. I used to always dribble all the time. I just grew — when I got to eighth grade I was six-four, and by the end of my senior year I'm six-nine. I always wanted to be that point guard.
