OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Andy Haldane

ARCHETYPE

The Reformer

Changing the system from inside it, principle turned into change.

Andy Haldane fits The Reformer archetype cleanly. As the Bank of England's Chief Economist he built a reputation for challenging orthodoxy from inside the institution, arguing for simpler regulation, questioning the profession's forecasting failures after the financial crisis, and pushing economics to engage with ordinary citizens through regional visits and community listening exercises. That instinct to renovate rather than merely run systems carried into his leadership of the RSA, where he has sharpened the organisation's focus on social and economic renewal, and into his work chairing the government's Levelling Up advisory council. Haldane pairs intellectual heterodoxy with institutional credibility, which lets him press for change without being dismissed as an outsider. His secondary strength is visionary, drawn to big systemic questions, but his defining pattern is reform, improving institutions he plainly believes in.
