OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Allen Iverson

ARCHETYPE

The Disruptor

Contrarian and drawn to the edge; challenges the settled answer.

Allen Iverson reads as The Disruptor because his transformation of the NBA was a consequence, not a campaign. He absorbed institutional punishment for cornrows, tattoos, and streetwear simply by refusing to be anyone other than himself, and the league eventually reorganised its norms around what he represented. His imprint on dress codes and the legitimisation of authenticity as a professional value came from someone constitutionally unwilling to conform, which is disruption in its purest form.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY DISRUPTOR

I took an ass whooping for it. But it's bittersweet because you see guys now they come in, they got their own style. They feel good, man — they want to feel good what they got on.

ON PIONEERING NBA STYLE CULTURE

I was always comfortable in my skin. I didn't want to wear a suit to a game. Y'all knew how we was — what were we going after the game to wear a suit? Nowhere.

ON AUTHENTICITY AND SELF-EXPRESSION

I play the same way in the finals that I play in a pickup game. That's why the lights never got too bright for me — because I play like this all the time.

ON COMPETITIVE CONSISTENCY AND IDENTITY
