OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Alex English

ARCHETYPE

The Operator

Execution, delivery and performance, gets the hard thing done.

Alex English reads as The Operator, a leader whose excellence came from relentless craft refinement rather than charisma or systems-building. Each summer he methodically added a specific skill, the high release, the running one-hander, the off-balance jumper, each one engineered to solve a concrete defensive problem. His own framing is pure process discipline: 'I worked my tail off. I said I'm not going to be denied.' Mastery of fundamentals is his entire identity.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY OPERATOR

I realized that if I could jump as high as I could and extend my arm as high as I could and release at the tip, it would be more difficult. So that's what I worked on all summer.

DEVELOPING HIGH-RELEASE JUMP SHOT

I prided myself more on my passing game, you know, being able to pass the ball — not just the scoring and rebounding.

REFLECTING ON FULL BODY OF WORK

Every summer I would work on a running one-hander, work on an off-balance running one-hander. The basic stuff — follow the shots, get the putbacks — those little things helped me when I got to be an NBA player.
