OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Alan M. Garber

ARCHETYPE

The Steward

Legacy, values and the long now, leadership as care and continuity.

Alan M. Garber is The Steward in the truest sense, a leader who assumed Harvard's presidency amid congressional scrutiny, campus tensions, and hard questions about academic freedom, and refused to abandon the university's foundational commitments under pressure. A physician-economist by training, he pairs analytical steadiness with principled endurance. He does not chase the moment. He protects the institution across it, which is exactly what Stewards exist to do.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY STEWARD

We sued because they cut off our funding. It was done in a precipitous manner without any real process. We really had no choice because we had hundreds of millions of dollars at stake.

DEFENDING HARVARD AGAINST FEDERAL FUNDING CUTS

We would adhere to the law, not change our values and principles, but we would certainly adhere to the law.

RESPONDING TO SUPREME COURT ADMISSIONS RULING

It is extremely important for Harvard and our peer institutions to re-establish trust in our institutions and our mission, because what we've accomplished really would not have been possible without this incredibly successful partnership with the federal government.
