OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Tim Hardaway Sr.

ARCHETYPE

The Pioneer

The frontier and an appetite for the unknown, goes first.

Tim Hardaway Sr. reads as The Pioneer through a career of origination rather than refinement. He invented the UTEP Two-Step crossover in a late-night practice gym and helped Don Nelson build a style of play he describes as 18 to 19 years ahead of its time. Hardaway did not polish what existed, he created what did not, then taught it forward to the next generation with the same street-earned rigor that shaped him.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY PIONEER

He always thought out the box. That's the way the game is today. Back then, early nineties, we talked about twenty years — eighteen, nineteen years ahead of his time.

DESCRIBING DON NELSON'S INNOVATIVE SYSTEM

I didn't know what I had. I didn't know what I was doing. I was just playing basketball, trying to get to the rim, trying to make a play — and that's where the UTEP Two-Step started.

ORIGIN OF HIS SIGNATURE CROSSOVER MOVE

Don't look at the emotions — listen to the message that he's telling. I received the message differently from how people receive messages.
