OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Theresa May

ARCHETYPE

The Steward

Legacy, values and the long now, leadership as care and continuity.

Theresa May exemplifies The Steward, a leader defined by duty, endurance and institutional service rather than charisma or ideology. Her six years as Home Secretary, one of the longest tenures in modern British history, established a reputation for methodical, cautious administration. As Prime Minister she inherited the Brexit mandate she had not campaigned for, and treated its delivery as an obligation to be honoured, pressing her withdrawal agreement through repeated parliamentary defeats. Critics saw rigidity, allies saw resilience, but few doubted her sense of responsibility to office and country. Her leadership was procedural and controlled, uncomfortable with theatre, more at ease with detail than persuasion. Even her resignation carried the Steward's signature, framed as service concluded rather than ambition thwarted. May's legacy is contested, but her conception of leadership as custodianship is unmistakable.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY STEWARD

On the morning when I moved into my new office, when the telephone rang for the first time I eagerly picked up the receiver to find out who the caller could be, only to discover that the person on the other end of the line wanted to speak to Edwina Currie.

Politics is about public service. Everything we do - in parliament, in our constituencies, here in Bournemouth - should be motivated by one goal. Improving the lives of our fellow citizens.

In recent years a number of politicians have behaved disgracefully and then compounded their offences by trying to evade responsibility. We all know who they are. Let's face it, some of them have stood on this platform.
