OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Stephen Miran

ARCHETYPE

The Navigator

Judgement in the fog, money, risk and the call others cannot make.

Miran navigates contested intellectual terrain with precision, rehabilitating monetarism not by ideology but by evidence, distinguishing what the data actually say from what conventional frameworks assume they say. His instinct is always diagnostic: which model fits this weather, which signal is being ignored, where is the lag miscalibrated. That empirical flexibility under uncertainty, applied to both Fed policy design and chair selection criteria, marks him as a Navigator rather than a Strategist or Reformer.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY NAVIGATOR

Models are kind of like jackets. You need to pull out the right jacket for the weather. You don't wear a down parka in July. It's important to understand that the models aren't universally true in all times and places.

ON FED DECISION-MAKING FLEXIBILITY

If you measure money correctly, you actually would have gotten the post GFC environment correctly. You would have gotten the post COVID environment correct too.

DEFENDING REVISED MONETARIST MEASUREMENT

I worry that some of these people are basically buying inflation at the top — treating monetary policy like momentum trading. I would want to be forward looking.
