Sheila Johnson
The Catalyst
Ideas with a spark, energy, range and the ability to start things.
Sheila Johnson reads as The Catalyst because she converts personal conviction into collective momentum, repeatedly and across industries that rarely intersect. Co-founding BET ignited a media movement for Black audiences before the industry acknowledged one existed. She then carried that same energy into hospitality, sports ownership, and philanthropy, each pivot mobilising new communities around her vision. Johnson does not walk established paths. She creates the conditions under which others begin to move.
“I said, I would like to buy into Lincoln Holdings, and I said I'd like to be the first woman and the first African American. I do not think there's any other franchise that can boast that opportunity.”
“I knew the town was financially bankrupt, and I said, I knew if I could do something as a businesswoman, I needed to put an economic engine in that place and an anchor.”
“Even with all of my money that I had at the time, I could not get a bank loan to build it. I had to use my own money to build that resort because I was a woman.”
