OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

ARCHETYPE

The Guardian

What holds, and what fails, under pressure, standards and accountability.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg reads as The Guardian, a leader whose authority came from protecting principle rather than pursuing acclaim. As a former US Supreme Court Justice, and in her appearance on The David Rubenstein Show, she embodied stewardship of institutions and ideals larger than herself. Her style was rigorous, patient, and unyielding on fundamentals, the discipline of someone who understood that lasting influence is built by defending what matters, case by careful case.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY GUARDIAN

We had sixty eight decisions after full briefing and argument. Twenty were five-four or five-three divisions, but twenty nine were unanimous. We agree more often than we sharply disagree.

DEFENDING COURT'S INSTITUTIONAL INTEGRITY

The great thing about our constitution is that, like our society, it can evolve.

CONSTITUTIONAL PHILOSOPHY DEBATE

Anger is not a useful emotion. I'm going to do something positive — she took my dissent and created the Notorious RBG blog.
