OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Ron Klain

ARCHETYPE

The Orchestrator

Scaling people and moving parts into one working whole.

Ron Klain reads as The Orchestrator because the role of White House Chief of Staff is, at its core, the art of making an enormously complex institution move in concert. His leadership, explored on The David Rubenstein Show, is defined by coordination rather than spotlight, aligning people, priorities, and process so that decisions actually land. Orchestrators create coherence out of competing demands, and that is precisely the discipline his career embodies.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY ORCHESTRATOR

I'm his first meeting the day. Every day, I kind of go through where things are and some key priorities, get his reaction to the materials he's been reading overnight. He usually comes in with questions. I try to come in with answers.

DESCRIBING DAILY COORDINATION WITH PRESIDENT

My job is just to help coordinate those people get that advice to the president. So that's how I see my role.

RESPONDING TO 'PRIME MINISTER' CRITICISM

I have probably the most experienced group of colleagues who have ever served at a senior level in the White House. I have people who carry a lot of the load every day. That makes the job a lot easier.
