Robert Hamilton Kelly

ARCHETYPE

The Architect

Structured and legacy-driven; builds the systems and institutions that last.

Robert Hamilton Kelly exemplifies The Architect archetype through his methodical construction of Petershill as a category-defining platform within alternative asset management. In this interview, Kelly articulates a deliberate, long-horizon framework for investing in GP stakes, grounding every decision in structural design: minority ownership preserves alignment, permanent listed capital ensures durability, and thematic sector selection anticipates decade-long shifts. He describes building Petershill from a blank-canvas idea in 2007 into a 40-plus partnership institution with disciplined underwriting and diversification as structural safeguards against cyclicality. Kelly does not rely on opportunism or charisma but on repeatable pattern recognition and institutional architecture, including integrating Petershill into Goldman's consolidated alternatives platform. His orientation is systemic and durable, prioritising business model integrity over short-term market validation.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY ARCHITECT

We were the category creator. We were creating a new field. So we had to start every meeting by explaining what we did and why we did it and why it could be profitable.

ON BUILDING PETERSHILL FROM SCRATCH

Ownership equals alignment and incentivization to the long term success of these businesses, which is why we typically come in and take on average 5 to 25% of these businesses and leave the rest of the economics with the management teams.

ON MINORITY OWNERSHIP PHILOSOPHY

The permanent capital that we have through Petershill Partners as a listed company is a pretty critical differentiator for us.
