Pia Sinha
The Reformer
Changing the system from inside it, principle turned into change.
Pia Sinha is The Reformer whose authority comes from correcting a system she knows from the inside. Her path from prison psychologist to governor to CEO of the Prison Reform Trust gives her critique unusual weight, and she deploys it by prioritising evidence over political expediency, confronting institutional inertia at places like HMP Liverpool. Even when, as a woman of colour, the rhetoric personally triggers her, she holds to nuanced, compassion-grounded policy.
“We need to move out of our echo chamber into areas where people don't necessarily know about the facts, and have faith that when people are armed with the facts and the evidence, they do think slightly differently.”
“If you're coming from a principled place, it has to be applied universally. You can't pick and choose what you like and what's consistent and what you don't like.”
“Even amongst all of this craziness, you still have to be the voice of reason and compassion and have hope — because unless there are people like yourself to do a good job, how do you actually influence the system?”
