Phil Handy

ARCHETYPE

The Architect

Structured and legacy-driven; builds the systems and institutions that last.

Phil Handy is The Architect because he sees structure where others see moments. Whether dissecting Drew Holiday's defensive architecture, mapping Juju Watkins's development since ninth grade, or diagnosing why European youth infrastructure produces more complete players, his lens is always foundational. He is less interested in flashes of brilliance than in the underlying frameworks that make players and teams function, and he builds his coaching around designing those systems deliberately.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY ARCHITECT

The youth coaches in this country are the most important coaches in the world. Why? Because they set the foundation of what they're teaching these young athletes. How they teach them — that's so important.

ON AMERICAN VS. EUROPEAN PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

She asks so many questions to make sure she's really trying to get her game right. Her star just took off, but she's still the same kid she was back in the ninth grade.

ON COACHING JUJU WATKINS

Their system of youth basketball is totally different. These guys are playing pro basketball when they're sixteen, seventeen years old. They're already learning how to be a pro, what's the schedule like.
