Nicolai Tangen

ARCHETYPE

The Disruptor

Contrarian and drawn to the edge; challenges the settled answer.

Nicolai Tangen earns The Disruptor by taking charge of Norway's sovereign wealth fund, among the world's most conservative financial institutions, and immediately unsettling its conventions. He introduced radical transparency in corporate governance voting, publicly pressed portfolio companies on executive pay, and carried arts-world unconventionality from his Kistefos Museum background into institutional finance. Visibly at ease with ambiguity, Tangen treats orthodoxy as a starting point for challenge, not a constraint to be honoured.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY DISRUPTOR

Happiness is about learning. That's how you measure happiness — how much you have learned. The person who's got the most money when they die, they have lost.

ON WEALTH, PURPOSE, AND HAPPINESS

We are now the most transparent fund in the world. We built a really great team. There's always lower risk to take the incumbent than changing — but there are really excellent people out there too.

MAKING CASE FOR REAPPOINTMENT

The best thing to do is always to do the opposite of everybody else. But it's very tough — if you are contrarian, there will be periods where you end up underperforming and everybody will question your sanity.
