OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Mitch Richmond

ARCHETYPE

The Operator

Execution, delivery and performance, gets the hard thing done.

Mitch Richmond is The Operator in its purest form, a Hall of Famer who manufactured output under conditions that broke lesser players. His Sacramento years, carrying a double-teamed team without star support, showcase competence built systematically rather than summoned through inspiration. He logged 500 to 600 shots nightly, studied opponents film by film, and undertook a deliberate multi-year reconstruction of his own shot. Richmond optimized himself like a craftsman, and the consistency followed.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY OPERATOR

I took pride in really kind of studying every guy. I would watch two or three games before I played, just to kind of see what he does, because he can do everything.

ON PREPARING TO GUARD MICHAEL JORDAN

I had to still get up each and every morning, man, and put on that jersey. I had to really kind of look in the mirror — I'm still playing the game of basketball I truly loved.

ON PERSEVERING THROUGH DIFFICULT SACRAMENTO YEARS

Dana Autman said, if you give me thirty minutes before practice, thirty minutes after practice, you have a great chance to get to the next level. And I worked on that every day.
