OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Larry Hughes

ARCHETYPE

The Guardian

What holds, and what fails, under pressure, standards and accountability.

Larry Hughes reads as The Guardian because duty, not ambition, steered his 13 seasons. He chose Saint Louis University to keep his family stable during his brother's illness, took Gil Arenas under his wing at Golden State like a younger sibling, and now channels his NBA platform into the Larry Hughes Academy, where character development explicitly outranks basketball performance. Protection is not a phase of his leadership, it is its organising principle.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY GUARDIAN

If I can get to the money, then I can take care of my mom. If I can get to the money, then I can make sure we can find whatever the best doctor or whatever's out there.

ON MOTIVATION TO GO ONE-AND-DONE

Basketball is just that tool, just that vehicle. We want to talk to you about who you are as a person — if you cannot start to identify who you are as a person, you can live longer, you can live happier.

ON THE LARRY HUGHES ACADEMY MISSION

I made sure that he was straight on the road if he needed to eat. Everything is on me — from clothes to food, all of that. I made sure that was a little brother.
