Kali Uchis stands as The Pioneer because her instincts have consistently run ahead of industry consensus rather than in response to it. She refused to collapse her bicultural, bilingual identity into a marketable monolith before doing so was commercially viable, building a path from a kicked-out teenager making music videos to a genre-defying artist on self-determined terms. Her advice to younger Latino artists, ignore label pressure and just be an artist, doubles as her own map.
