OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

John Authers

ARCHETYPE

The Navigator

Judgement in the fog, money, risk and the call others cannot make.

John Authers emerges in this interview as a Navigator, someone who charts meaning through complex financial terrain using journalism as his compass rather than capital. Authers describes his career not as a quest for alpha but as a sustained effort to understand and explain, noting he thinks of himself 'more as a journalist trying to understand what's going on.' He self-corrects openly, acknowledging a career-long bearish bias and recommending a health warning on his own columns. His methodology is disciplined: he reconstructs data independently before writing, tests explanations from first principles, and builds trusted networks across generations. His Mexico posting shaped his entire framework for the 2008 crisis, illustrating how he derives lasting orientation from peripheral vantage points. Authers navigates between skepticism and humility, between institutional scale at Bloomberg and the craft he honed at the FT, always recalibrating without losing directional integrity.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY NAVIGATOR

I still think of myself more as a journalist trying to understand what's going on and explain it rather than somebody who is really fascinated by this and wants to show you how to make more money than anyone else.

ON WHY HE CHOSE FINANCIAL JOURNALISM

I have probably over the course of my career been too bearish. I do think perhaps I should have a health warning at the end of column saying, remember it's always risky to be out of the market. You should be in stocks most of the time.

REFLECTING ON INVESTING LESSONS AND BIASES

Know what you own and know why you own it. I expanded that slightly to know what you know and know what you don't know. If you don't know why you are holding on to something, what are you up to?
