Jesse Norman

Jesse Norman fits the Steward archetype more naturally than most frontbench politicians. A biographer of Edmund Burke and Adam Smith before and during his Commons career, he treats politics as a custodial exercise, protecting institutions, conventions and intellectual traditions rather than chasing headlines. His ministerial record at the Treasury and Department for Transport was marked by careful, technocratic delivery rather than ideological theatre, and his long service on the Treasury Select Committee showed the same patient scrutiny. As Shadow Leader of the House he is well cast, since the role rewards respect for parliamentary procedure and the rights of the legislature.
