OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Jean-Philippe Bouchaud

ARCHETYPE

The Disruptor

Contrarian and drawn to the edge; challenges the settled answer.

Jean-Philippe Bouchaud earns The Disruptor archetype by treating financial economics as a discipline worth demolishing and rebuilding from first principles. Where the mainstream assumed rational actors and efficient prices, he imported statistical physics to show markets generate their own turbulent dynamics. He co-founded CFM to industrialise that heresy at scale, then compounded the bet by sharing proprietary data openly with academia. His leadership makes intellectual insurgency an operating model, not a posture.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY DISRUPTOR

Physicists have to do something about this. Financial markets spit statistics every day, and I thought this is a very interesting complex system. There are crisis, crashes, jumps, this system seems to be driven by its own dynamics.

EXPLAINING TRANSITION FROM PHYSICS TO FINANCE

We believe it's our role to give back. We have access to so much data — academics don't — and when we find something beyond daily work that can be published and brings something to the academic debate, we publish it.

ON PUBLISHING ACADEMIC RESEARCH FROM HEDGE FUND

Markets are not driven by fundamentals, or at least only to a small extent on the long term. On short run — meaning one day to one year — it's really flows that matter. That is people buying or selling stuff, whatever the reason.
