OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Jameer Nelson

ARCHETYPE

The Orchestrator

Scaling people and moving parts into one working whole.

Jameer Nelson is The Orchestrator because his authority has always been relational rather than hierarchical. He held Orlando's locker room together for a decade without a formal captaincy, paid for teammates' offseason training out of his own pocket, and consulted every player before choosing to play injured in the Finals. In the front office those same habits persist, his influence flowing through people and trust rather than through any title.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY ORCHESTRATOR

I always looked at myself as the leader of the team. You got to show dudes that you're vulnerable. You gotta show dudes that you're invested in them, you sacrifice or something. It wasn't about the bread — I'm investing my time in you.

EXPLAINING OFFSEASON TEAM WORKOUTS PHILOSOPHY

I went to every teammate, man to man, every coach, man to man. If one person would have said no, I wouldn't have did it. And I told them that.

ON DECIDING TO PLAY IN THE FINALS INJURED

To be my name in stone in assists — it's a credit to the longevity, being in that successful situation where people pushed me to be successful. That meant more to me than any basketball accolade I ever got.
