OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

J.J. Redick

ARCHETYPE

The Operator

Execution, delivery and performance, gets the hard thing done.

J.J. Redick is The Operator because his excellence was engineered, not summoned. The evidence is almost comically precise: 342 shots every Sunday for 13 years, hour-by-hour schedules, a cold tub timed to 12 minutes and 25 seconds. That system turned an undisciplined sophomore into a 15-year NBA veteran, and the same operational rigor now governs his media work, where structured analysis consistently outruns the temptation of narrative heat.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY OPERATOR

Every time you get in the cold tub, every time you lift weights, every time you have an hour shooting workout — it's all drops in the bucket. My off seasons were six days a week, two or three workouts a day.

DESCRIBING HIS CAREER-LONG REGIMEN

Make three hundred and forty two shots exactly every Sunday in the off season for the last thirteen years. Seven spots on the floor, twenty spot twos, twenty spot threes, three dribbles going right, three dribbles going left — plus twenty free throws.

EXPLAINING HIS SUNDAY SHOOTING ROUTINE

I knew exactly what I was gonna eat for breakfast, exactly when I was gonna get to the gym, exactly how many minutes in the hot tub. I had my naps timed out. By the end of my career I said, I need to fall asleep at one-oh-five to wake up at three-thirty.
