Indhu Rubasingham leads the National Theatre as The Convener, treating shared story as the mechanism by which polarised communities meet. She commissions what she calls state of the world plays, yet insists good theatre never tells audiences what to think, only provokes questions. Her modern mainstream concept, and her programming of debut voices alongside established names, reveals a leader whose first instinct is to widen the circle of participation rather than impose a singular vision.
