OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

Greg Oden

ARCHETYPE

The Pioneer

The frontier and an appetite for the unknown, goes first.

Greg Oden earns The Pioneer designation not through triumph but through tenacity, forging an identity entirely outside the stardom scripted for him. After multiple career-ending knee surgeries and profound isolation, he refused retreat. Enrolling at Butler, pursuing a master's degree focused on athlete mental health, and moving into coaching, he converted prolonged adversity into a professional frontier that most athletes never attempt. His leadership is the act of building where nothing was promised.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY PIONEER

After that it was some dark places, just trying to figure out who I am and what I thought everybody thought I should be, but what I thought people were saying about me.

REFLECTING ON POST-PORTLAND RELEASE

I wanted to go back and have some credibility. I'm trying to get in the space where I can go out to teams. I know sometimes some of these players don't want to talk to professionals — I've been through everything you could possibly think of.

ON PURSUING MENTAL HEALTH COACHING ROLE

When I was coaching at Butler, I literally brought those playoff books to the gym and put them in my office desk and would look over them to help me with how the Miami Heat looked at things.
