Geoffrey Hinton
The Pioneer
The frontier and an appetite for the unknown, goes first.
Geoffrey Hinton is the archetypal Pioneer, a leader whose influence came from pursuing an unfashionable idea for decades until the world caught up. He championed neural networks through long periods when the field dismissed them, mentoring a generation of researchers in Toronto who went on to drive the deep learning revolution. His leadership style is intellectual rather than managerial, built on conviction, patient experimentation, and a willingness to be wrong in public. The Turing Award and the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics recognised that persistence. His 2023 departure from Google to speak freely about AI risks showed the Pioneer instinct in a new form, breaking from institutional comfort to open a difficult frontier of debate. Hinton leads by going first, even when the destination is uncertain.
