OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

David West

ARCHETYPE

The Navigator

Judgement in the fog, money, risk and the call others cannot make.

David West is The Navigator, a leader who recalibrates at each stage rather than reacting impulsively. From flunking out of high school to military school to Xavier, where he deliberately stayed four years, then remodeling his game around a mid-range jumper after studying Karl Malone film, West shows a lifelong pattern of deliberate self-correction. Even turning down bigger programs reflects the same discipline, long-horizon thinking over the obvious course, at every fork in the road.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY NAVIGATOR

Wherever they want me the most is where I'm going. And you know, I remember coach Prosser came and saw me, walked across the court, was like, yo, you got a scholarship. I don't need to see anymore.

CHOOSING XAVIER OVER BIGGER PROGRAMS

I've never wont something. Somebody starts saying something or things start shaving up a certain way, I accept it, and then I just figured out how we're gonna go from there. That's kind of been the path of my life.

ON HIS DRAFT PROCESS PHILOSOPHY

I went in the gym, started making three, four, five hundred a day, just straight, nothing fancy, no crazy drills, just literally got comfortable shooting that ship and that ball going in the basket.
