OTA LEADERSHIP INDEX

David Risher

ARCHETYPE

The Operator

Execution, delivery and performance, gets the hard thing done.

David Risher is The Operator in its purest expression, a leader who closes the gap between commitment and execution rather than chasing transformation. At Lyft he cut costs by $330M, raised driver pay, and drove cancellation rates from 15% to under 4.5%, fundamentals fixed one metric at a time. His vocabulary is accountability itself: promises made, defects tracked, improvements ground out year over year. The results speak in the language he prefers, numbers.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY OPERATOR

We had to reduce our cost significantly, so we laid off about a third of the company — twenty six percent actually — and about three hundred and thirty million dollars of savings. We also had to raise driver pay.

RESTRUCTURING LYFT AFTER BECOMING CEO

When I joined, about fifteen percent of the time drivers would cancel on you. Today it's less than four and a half percent. We've been grinding away year after year because it's so infuriating to riders.

OBSESSING OVER OPERATIONAL RELIABILITY METRICS

We are very focused on reliability. We're going to make a promise, we're going to meet the promise. If your car shows up later than we estimated, it's because we made a mistake, and we are trying over and over again to eliminate those defects.
