David Haber

ARCHETYPE

The Pioneer

The frontier and an appetite for the unknown, goes first.

David Haber emerges in this interview as a Pioneer, someone who consistently moves into uncharted territory ahead of consensus and builds new infrastructure where none existed. As a biochemistry student who taught himself finance during the 2008 crisis, then founded a small-business lending company at the intersection of APIs and credit, then helped Goldman Sachs conceptualize a platform banking model, and finally planted Andreessen Horowitz's first general partner flag outside the Bay Area, Haber repeatedly positions himself at the frontier. His investment in Carry First, the firm's first Africa deal, and his thesis on private market exchanges further confirm this orientation. He frames opportunity not as executing within established categories but as finding what lies between fields of expertise, a signature Pioneer instinct. His advice to younger listeners, identifying the defining macro trend of your generation and entering it early, reflects the same forward-leaning, category-creating disposition that has defined his own career.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY PIONEER

Opportunities live between fields of expertise. I find myself really enjoying exploring the intersections. It's one of the reasons why I've always loved fintech because I've always viewed it more as a horizontal than as a vertical.

ON INVESTMENT PHILOSOPHY AND FINTECH

People think we're running a fund. We're actually building a company. And it's this notion in my mind of building a company more than running a fund, an effort to try to build enduring value.

ON ANDREESSEN HOROWITZ'S FIRM AMBITION

The most successful people I know have gone into large macro trends early. What is the big macro trend of your generation? Because it's probably whatever is far out and on the come.
