Brian Armstrong

ARCHETYPE

The Visionary

The future, and what is barely possible, reads round the next corner.

Brian Armstrong reads as The Visionary because he committed to making cryptocurrency accessible to ordinary people long before institutional legitimacy arrived. He founded Coinbase in 2012, when regulators were hostile, banks were sceptical, and Bitcoin carried a fringe reputation, then held conviction through brutal market cycles and took the company public via direct listing in 2021. His mission is framed in civilisational terms, economic freedom for everyone, and he leads toward that horizon rather than reacting to the moment.

IN THEIR WORDS, WHY VISIONARY

I read the Bitcoin white paper and I really it captured my attention in a profound way. I remember thinking this might be one of the most important things I've ever read — like the Internet but for moving value around.

EARLY BITCOIN CONVICTION MOMENT

We wanted to be the first crypto company to go out there and assumed it would take three or four years to go through a cycle, begin to educate, build trust in the public markets.

DECISION TO GO PUBLIC FIRST

Coinbase is probably the tenth idea I had that I tried, and that one ended up working really well. You have to be okay with resilience and failures and setbacks along the way.
