Brenda Emmanus OBE
The Diplomat
People, composure and the difficult conversation held well.
Brenda Emmanus OBE is a British broadcaster, documentary maker and cultural critic whose career spans more than three decades of national television, radio, documentary and live events. She was appointed OBE for services to broadcasting and diversity. Her documentary work for the BBC, including "Charles I: Treasures Reunited" and "Whoever Heard of a Black Artist?", has reached audiences of over 200 million people worldwide. Her interview record spans the global icons of culture, Oprah Winfrey, Sir Elton John, Will Smith, Robert Redford, David Hockney, Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, alongside a sustained championing of emerging voices and overlooked talent. She began her professional career at The Voice newspaper, moved into BBC News and Current Affairs, then youth programming, then arts and documentary, before leaving the BBC to build a portfolio career. She is chair of the board of trustees for Sir Matthew Bourne's New Adventures, a founding member of the Creative Industries Alliance, and continues to mentor, with explicit succession intent, across the media sector. Her current portfolio includes podcast hosting, live event work, scriptwriting and ongoing on-camera presenting. She appeared on Off The Agenda hosted by Sir Charles Bowman, co-hosted by Chloe Hoggard, the rare interview where the storyteller is on the other side of the sofa. The conversation is unusually generative as source material: an articulate, decades-long reflection on leadership built through visibility, mentorship and quiet, sustained agenda-setting from inside a major institution.
“I always felt it was an uncomfortable uniform for me, and I always saw myself as a champion of women, a champion of my community, a champion of the arts and artists, 'cause that always felt much more comfortable for me.”
“I was very conscious that I didn't want to be pigeonholed. If I could operate in the mainstream, I could probably operate everywhere, because I don't have to explain to my community who I am.”
“That's why when people talk about diversity and they think if you bring a Black or Brown person or a woman to the table, a white man's gonna lose. No. There's wisdom and experience there. We want you to sit at the table with us.”
